 YOUR ACCOMMODATIONS

You may be surprised to learn that you don’t have to be uncomfortable when on safari.  Put your preconceptions and inhibitions gently to one side and approach this element of your journey with an open mind.  Where you stay when on safari can add dimensions to your days and nights and is often an experience in itself.

There are two distinct genres of accommodation, namely camps and lodges.  The former is usually canvas, but there is a whole scale from a very “light” camp that can be easily moved to different locations and which will be comfortable but possess few frills to the permanent tented camps that will likely have running water, often be on a platform of some sort and have all of the furnishings you’d expect in a good hotel room.

Lodges, too, vary hugely from the beautifully simple to the elegantly indulgent and everything in between.  Some have open-fronted rooms, while others are encased in glass.

There is also the novelty accommodation of “star beds” or “fly camps,” which, as their names imply, seek to shed as many of the barriers between you and the great wilderness as possible.  These make for thrilling nights out, and you may not sleep that well in such unfamiliar and exciting circumstances, but you will have memories that last a lifetime and some great dinner-table stories.

Regardless of whether you are under canvas or in a permanent lodge, one thing you can be assured of is the extraordinary friendliness of the staff.  In circumstances that are often challenging and remote, they produce the most amazing meals and offer standards of service that seldom fail to impress. We work with locals with a reputation for sustainability and service to their communities; many are family-owned lodgers whose dedication to the land goes back generations.

One of our most important roles in developing your safari with you is to understand a bit more about you in order to better recommend suitable accommodations. There is no one size fits all, and certainly, the better the fit, the more enjoyable the experience will be for you.
